Project Description
Massimals in the Loop is a public art installation that places large bear sculptures, or Massimals, around the Chicago Pedway. Massimals are 1:1 design objects that serve as prototypes to examine how physical form can engage community and bring attention often neglected public facilities. These constructs are abstractions of animal forms built in the manner of massing study models produced in an architectural design practice.
Massimals in the Loop is located in the Chicago Pedway, a network of underground tunnels linking major buildings and transit stops in the Chicago Loop. Presented at a variety of scales, each Massimal demonstrates a transformation of color as you move around and through the traveling herd distributed throughout the pedway.
The Massimals are situated to bring attention to the Pedway’s unusual form and features and encourage people to consider the potential of spaces often neglected as merely a means of moving between locations. The Massimals mingle with the pedestrians in three locations: a strip of the pedway in front of the underground Macy’s entrance, at an intersection of corridors beneath the Daley Center, and in the atrium of the Thompson Center. On display during the winter months, the project brings a playful spirit to the typically drab tunnels and provokes interaction from passers-by.
Each object is fabricated from colorful lightweight sheets, cut and fitted together to form the large “eggcrate” model of a bear shape. The components are easy to flat pack and may be reused and redeployed on other sites in the future.
Massimals in the Loop was organized by the Chicago Loop Alliance and curated by Space p11, an independent gallery for off-grid art, architecture, and culture.
