ARC 599: Spring 2018 Design Elective

Fabricating Play

Fabricating Play explores the use of the systematic processes of digital design and fabrication directed towards the development of an architectural installation that considers how the resulting artifact may activate user participation. This full scale intervention will serve as a prototype for the design and production of architecture.

The course begins with individual investigations of material and form and then moves forward as a team to select the elements, aesthetics, forms, and methods to fabricate the final prototype(s).  Readings and tutorials will be given from time to time and as necessary.  Rather than a lecture format, we will learn from each other through presentations, critique, and discussion.

The final installation, Glow Figure, is a hanging construct of an array of over 3,000 nylon strings. Enclosed within this field are the profiles of two domes defined by the glowing highlights of the string ends. The ephemeral nature of the project allows a variety of field effects through user engagement and response to the dynamic forces of the environment.

This project made possible with funding from the Beaux Arts Foundation and the College of Design School of Architecture.
