Course Description
The University of Kentucky College of Design Architecture Studio in Berlin is an eight-week study abroad program led by Associate Professor of Architecture, Jason Scroggin. Each participant enrolls in two courses, a six-credit design studio and three-credit design elective, that explore, analyze, and discuss the forces that define and shape the city of Berlin. The result of these investigations are a series of design interventions that question the relationship between the urban object and the network of movement in a contemporary city.
The studio is located at the Aedes Network Campus Berlin (ANCB) Metropolitan Laboratory in the Prenzlauer Berg district in central Berlin. Here students have the opportunity to collaborate with visiting international design universities, participate in design workshops, and have immediate access to the internationally renowned Aedes gallery. Students will also be able to attend all lectures and symposia hosted by the institute during the duration of the studio. Additional workshops and lectures will be arranged to focus on the use of contemporary design tools to help facilitate design research and production of the studio project.
In addition to the design research and production, the studio will undertake a number of research field trips to architectural and urban design precedents inside and outside of the city and visit design offices to understand the nature of practice in Berlin. The schedule allows free travel on most weekends and includes an extended group trip to explore the region. For the Summer 2017 program, the studio traveled to Iceland to explore the geographical features of the natural landscape.
